St. Mary's Crew Makes Big Waves at Ergathon
By Dan Sahutske
ORCHARD LAKE - The Eaglet rowers found old records easy prey at their annual
spring fundraiser, on March 24, 2007. Sixty tough men kept their rowing machines,
or "ergs" spinning all day long to log over 600,000 meters (372
miles) to raise money for their program.
Ian Silviera crushed an already hard to believe record set last year by Tim
Simon by rowing 16,691 meters, over 10 miles, in an hour. Ian passed Tim's
record of 16,535 meters with 30 seconds to go and finished by raising the
bar another notch for next year! That is averaging a 500 meter split time
of about 1:48 for an entire hour. Translation… Hauling rear!! This
guy is definitely one to come out and see this year.
The coxswains' race, an annual favorite, was won by Luke Davis. "Luke
came from behind down the stretch, to beat a valiant A.J. Doyle and Dan Sawchuk",
according to head coach John Ray.
Another record took a tumble on this day. Led by sophomore Kyle Sahutske,
the crew raised significantly more money for the program than they ever have.
Kyle worked very hard to deliver over $2000 in pledges for his team. Great
job Kyle! Head coach John Ray sees the day as looking very good for the upcoming
season and said, this goes a long way to getting these boys the best, best
maintained, and safest equipment money can buy.
